The Las Vegas City Council, in a 4-3 vote, has banned the outdoor release of balloons inflated with gases such as helium. They carved out some exceptions.

SUPPORTERS of the ordinance emphasized the dangers of Mylar balloons, which can cause power outages when entangled in power lines.  Environmental advocates also pointed out the risks to wildlife, particularly desert tortoises that can mistake balloons for food.

OPPONENTS raised concerns about the ordinance's enforcement and potential impact on disadvantaged communities.
